Understanding Fans: Essential Machines for Fluid Flow

A fan is a mechanical device designed to create airflow within a fluid, most commonly air. It consists of a set of rotating blades or vanes that act on the fluid to generate motion. The assembly of the blades and the central hub is known as the impeller, rotor, or runner. Fans are typically housed in a protective casing, which not only helps direct the airflow but also increases safety by preventing external objects from coming into contact with the blades.

While fans are predominantly powered by electric motors, other power sources, such as hydraulic motors or internal combustion engines, can also be used. Unlike compressors, which generate high pressure at low volumes, fans are designed to produce a large volume of airflow at relatively low pressure, although still higher than the surrounding ambient air pressure.

In many applications, the design of fan blades is key to their efficiency. These blades are often in motion when exposed to a moving fluid stream. Devices such as wind turbines and anemometers (used for measuring wind speed) rely on principles similar to those of fans, incorporating rotating blades to harness energy or measure air movement.
